Prof. David Wheeler

Prof. David Wheeler is Professor of Kidney Medicine at University College London, UK and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. He is a clinical scientist interested in the management of chronic kidney disease. He has participated in the development and running of several large-scale clinical trials testing therapeutic interventions in patients with chronic kidney disease. He was co-principal investigator of the DAPA-CKD trial, a global trial that contributed to a change in Guidelines to endorse the use of Sodium Glucose-2 cotransporter inhibitors in patients with chronic kidney disease. He has developed clinical practice guidelines for several organisations, most recently for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), of which he was Co-Chair from 2012-2019. He has recently completed a term as Chair of the International Society of Nephrology Advancing Clinical Trials (ISN-ACT) Committee. Previous roles include President of the UK Renal Association. He is currently National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) National Specialty Lead for Renal disorders. At a local level he is Clinical R&D Theme Director at the Royal Free Hospital and Clinician Research Lead for the Centre for Kidney and Bladder Health at University College London. He is currently Editor in Chief of the American Journal of Kidney Disease. He has been ranked in the top 1% of researchers globally based on citations for the years 2021-2024.
