Professor Sunil Bhandari graduated from the University of Edinburgh, trained in Kidney and Transplant Medicine in Yorkshire (UK) and Sydney Australia. 

He is a full time Consultant in Nephrology and Honorary Professor at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. 

Professor Bhandari also serves as:

  • Co-Chair of the UK Advanced Nephrology Course
  • Co-Chair of UK Kidney Association 2025 Program Committee
  • Interim Director of Medical Education Teesside University
  • Vice President for Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh (RCPE)
  • Academic Representative for RCPE on AoMRC

He has a keen interest in Education and Training at all levels of training in the UK and internationally to ensure the optimal care of patients.

Professor Bhandari’s research interests include:

  • Kidney anaemia optimal use of iron in dialysis (PIVOTAL-NEJM 2019) and the effects of iron therapy on cardiac function with a focus on uraemic cardiomyopathy and mitochondrial function and Chair/Author 2024 UKKA Anaemia of CKD Guidelines
  • Delaying kidney disease (CKD) progression (STOP ACEI Trial – NEJM 2022) and a co-author of UKKA SGLT2 inhibitor guidelines.
